How much should a diabetic patient eat?

More than half of adults with adult-onset diabetes are overweight.  As a result of obesity, insulin does not have the expected effect (reduced effect) and blood glucose is not controlled due to this.  Losing weight alone can increase the effectiveness of insulin and control diabetes.  Overweight diabetics are usually told to cut their daily caloric intake by a fifth.  To be more precise, it can be said that approximately 500 calories should be eaten less than the daily requirement.  By doing this, one to one and a half kilos of weight is lost every month.  The best way to reduce calories from food is to completely reduce fat from food.  One gram of fat contains nine calories.  So, if the extra 50 grams of fat in the food is reduced, 450 calories can be reduced by the same.  In short, you don't need to eat less or starve yourself to lose weight, eat full - just reduce fat (ghee-oil) and increase consumption of green raw vegetables (salad).

When and how often should a diabetic patient eat?

It is also necessary for a diabetic patient to maintain a regular diet along with dieting.  Do not make the mistake of eating only once or twice a day.  Eat at least four-five times a day.  Diabetes can be better controlled by eating small amounts often rather than eating too much at once.  It is necessary to time the meal with the time of insulin injection or medication.  It is very important to eat within half an hour after taking the medicine or injection because otherwise the effect of the medicine-injection will decrease the glucose in the blood and glucose will not reach from the food.  When this happens, the patient often feels dizzy, the body sweats, the heart starts beating fast and sometimes the patient even faints.  Thus, timing of food and medicine is essential.

Diabetic patients should not eat rice?

This is a very widespread misconception regarding diabetes diet.  In fact, almost the same amount of sugar is obtained from rice and wheat.  So the belief that diabetes can be controlled by eating roti and not by eating rice is completely wrong.  Ullu, eat as much (raw) roti flour without ghee than roti with ghee - by weight Eating is more desirable.  If milled rice is used instead of milled polished rice, it contains many times more fiber than milled rice which is beneficial for the patient.  Adequate intake of other fiber-rich foods (such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables) is important for diabetics.  Cereals like kodri, nagli, kang, ragi, jaan contain more fiber than wheat-rice and their consumption should be increased.  The fibers of fenugreek and isabgul are also important in controlling diabetes.

A diabetic patient should not eat sweets at all?

The most disliked diet for diabetics is to stop eating sweets.  When any person gets diabetes, relatives - relatives - friends - elders - doctors all give one advice that "stop sugar - jaggery - sweets etc. completely from your food!"  To drink tea without sugar and not to eat anything swallowed”.  In addition to this, many people believe that the cause of diabetes is swallowing things!  Many patients come asking that "Sir, I never eat sweets, so how did I get diabetes?"

In short, till now common people have been believing that eating sweets leads to diabetes and if diabetes is present then one should stop eating sweets.  Most of the doctors also advise that diabetic patients should not eat sugar-jaggery-sweets.  But, you will be surprised to know that several studies conducted in the last few years have shown that consuming a small amount of sugar in the diet (ten-fifteen grams per day) does not harm the control of diabetes!  A teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of starch (sugars found in grains) raise blood sugar in about the same amount.  Therefore, if you want to take sugar in food, then other sugars (starch etc.) should be taken less.

Most of the people make the mistake of adding extra sugar in their daily diet.  In this way, extra calories and sugars go into the blood, if sugars are added, reducing other sugars (carbohydrates) that provide the same amount of calories does not affect the control of diabetes.  In simple words, a person who drinks a full cup of tea without sugar should drink half a cup of tea instead of a full cup if he wants to drink sugary tea while keeping diabetes under control.  Similarly, if five to ten grams of jaggery is taken in food, half a roti should be eaten less.  Similarly less If you have taken a small piece of mava-malai-ghee dessert, you should reduce it by one roti.

If you eat everything else more than the daily amount or the same amount as daily and then go to eat dessert on top, sugar will never be under control.  In short, several recent carefully conducted studies suggest that diabetics do not need to cut out sugar altogether.  In small amounts, substituting jaggery for other foods does not change diabetes control.  Of course, like other healthy people, diabetics should also avoid taking too much jaggery.  It is not necessary for anyone to take more than fifteen-twenty grams of jaggery in a day.  It may happen that if some person eats sugar, there is no particular effect on blood sugar and if another person eats sugar, it increases the blood sugar of that person.

But this can happen not only with sugar but with all other foods.  There is no need to fool yourself into thinking that you are on a complete diet by just cutting out sweets or rice-potatoes to control diabetes.  The most important diet in diabetes diet is to reduce saturated and hydrogenated fats from food by stopping meat, ghee-butter-cream from food.  Along with this, it is very important to eat natural foods (fruits, vegetables, pulses and whole grains) that contain enough fiber, vitamins and antioxidants in the diet.

Which fruit should a diabetic patient eat?

Flour is rich in fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, is low in fat, and contains sugars in the form of fructose, which contributes less to raising blood sugar than other sugars.  Of course, the effect of fruit on blood sugar varies from person to person, depending on the time of the meal and the presence of other foods.  In general, it is preferable to consume whole fruits rather than juice.  Wherever possible, fruits with peel should be preferred.

Fruits can be taken for breakfast or lunch along with other foods.  Mixing fruits in the salad also makes a delicious salad.  Dry fruits can be cooked in small quantities along with grains.  When away from home and feeling hungry, it is better to eat fruits instead of eating fried snacks.  Instead of eating sherbet-ice cream etc., you can eat a delicious dish of fruits.  Of course, each person's blood sugar rises to a different extent after eating different fruits.  Many people get sugar by eating fruits like bananas, mangoes, chiku, grapes etc May increase soon.  Which fruit does not increase your blood sugar, you should check your blood after eating that fruit and then choose the fruit.

Can diabetes be controlled by eating fenugreek seeds?

Several recent studies have shown that diabetes can be easily controlled if fenugreek seeds are consumed along with regular meals.  People who eat or crush fenugreek seeds with water or buttermilk and drink two spoons (about twelve and a half grams) 15 minutes before each meal are very beneficial.  Soaked fenugreek seeds from the previous night or crushed fenugreek seeds can be mixed in rotli, dosa, idli, upma, poolao, dhokla, dal and curry.  Fenugreek powder is covered in all these dishes.  The benefit of eating fenugreek seeds to control sugar in diabetes is not that of eating fenugreek bhaji.  Eating 25 to 50 grams of fenugreek throughout the day gives maximum benefit.  Sometimes those who start eating fenugreek experience gas, indigestion or diarrhea.  If this happens, reduce the dose and try to increase it after a few days.

Does a diabetic patient have to take vitamin, chromium or zinc pills?

A diabetic patient has the same requirement of vitamin or zinc as any other healthy person, so as long as a balanced diet (roti, dal, rice, vegetables, milk etc.) is taken in proper quantity, the patient does not need any kind of vitamin, chromium or zinc pill.  There is no  People whose diet is very limited or very low in food may sometimes need to take such a pill-capsule.  Keeping all these dietary suggestions in mind the patient has to plan a diet for himself and stick to it strictly forever.  A ready-made table about how many calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber (fiber) has to be considered in which food is to be planned is given in the booklet named 'Swatshya Ayat' of Lifestyle Sampoot.
